This Georgian sterling silver epergne was produced in London during the mid-18th century, with the detachable baskets hallmarked 1755 and attributed to William Cripps, accompanied by a secondary maker’s mark AP (not securely identified). Executed during the George II period, the piece exemplifies the height of English rococo silver design.

The epergne is constructed in cast, raised, chased, and pierced sterling silver, displaying elaborate scrolling foliage, shell motifs, and asymmetrical rocaille ornament throughout. The central bowl rises from a boldly sculpted base with scrolling legs terminating in stylized feet, supporting four gracefully curved arms, each fitted with a detachable pierced basket.

The baskets are richly decorated with openwork scrolls and shell elements, allowing light to pass through and enhancing the visual depth of the composition. The central bowl is similarly pierced and chased, unified stylistically with the arms and base. One surface bears a finely engraved noble armorial, indicating commission by or ownership of an aristocratic family.

Epergnes of this caliber were centerpiece objects in formal Georgian dining, intended to hold fruit, flowers, or confectionery, while simultaneously asserting wealth, taste, and social standing. The craftsmanship and weight reflect both technical mastery and the prestige associated with London silver of this period.
