Elkington & Co. Sterling Silver and Cut Glass Figural Centerpiece
Elkington & Co. Sterling Silver and Cut Glass Figural Centerpiece
A Victorian sterling silver and cut glass centerpiece by Elkington & Co., featuring bacchanal putti, ram’s head urn motifs, and armorial engraving.
This Victorian sterling silver centerpiece was produced by Elkington & Co., Birmingham, in 1880, and reflects the firm’s mastery of the Louis XVI Revival style. The piece is fully hallmarked and further stamped with a diamond-shaped registry mark dated March 24, 1877, bundle 10, along with pattern number 9236.
The centerpiece is composed of a colorless cut glass bowl, finely faceted and seated above a sculptural silver support. The bowl is upheld by two bacchanal putti figures, symmetrically positioned and flanking a central ram’s head urn, a classical symbol associated with strength and abundance.
The silver base is formed in an elongated navette shape, richly chased and decorated with scrollwork and relief ornamentation. One cartouche bears an engraved armorial crest of a member of the Fenton-Livingstone family, depicting a dexter arm in armor embowed holding a sword emerging from an antique crown, accompanied by the Latin motto “Virtute Et Fide Vinco” (“By virtue and faith I conquer”). The opposite cartouche is engraved with a monogram.
This centerpiece represents high Victorian ceremonial silver, intended for formal dining or display, combining figural sculpture, heraldry, and functional design into a unified statement piece.
