Pair of Victorian Sterling Silver and Glass Figural Comports, Stephen Smith & Son, London 1872
Pair of Victorian Sterling Silver and Glass Figural Comports, Stephen Smith & Son, London 1872
A fine pair of Victorian sterling silver and glass comports with figural supports, crafted by Stephen Smith & Son, London, 1872.
This elegant pair of Victorian sterling silver and glass comports was produced in London in 1872 by Stephen Smith & Son, a respected 19th-century English silversmith. The pair exemplifies the period’s fascination with figural and naturalistic ornamentation combined with functional tableware.
Each comport is supported by a finely cast figure—one male and one female—standing in graceful contrapposto and extending branches of twining leaves and foliate sprigs upward to support the glass dish. The sculptural detailing reflects strong classical influence, with carefully rendered drapery and expressive posture.
The bases are circular and richly decorated with applied fruiting vine motifs, raised on three winged paw feet that add both stability and decorative emphasis. The undersides are numbered 2582 and 2584, indicating matched production.
The glass dishes are detachable and feature scalloped rims with etched foliate scroll decoration, complementing the silver mounts while providing practical use for serving or display.
This pair represents a refined example of Victorian table silver, combining sculptural artistry with elegant utility.
