This distinguished George III sterling silver epergne, crafted in London in 1775 by Emick Romer, represents an early and refined example of English table silver. Its significance is further elevated by a later engraved presentation inscription linking it to the legacy of the Great Exhibition of 1851.

The central shaped oval basket is decorated with a chased husk and shell border, with a finely pierced body incorporating swag and medallion motifs. The piece is engraved with a detailed inscription recording its presentation by H.R.H. The President and Her Majesty’s Commissioners for the Exhibition of 1851 to The Rt. Hon. Sir Lyon Playfair K.C.B., M.P., in recognition of his six years of service as Honorary Secretary to the Royal Commission, dated May 1889.

The epergne is supported on an oval stand with conforming husk bands, decorative borders, and an applied apron, raised on four scroll and shell-form feet. Four elegant scrolling branches extend outward, each supporting a circular basket, creating a balanced and architectural composition.

An engraved crest appears on the piece, though currently unidentified. The combination of Georgian craftsmanship and later Victorian historical association makes this a particularly compelling collector’s item.

This is not just decorative silver—it is a historically connected object bridging two important periods: the Georgian era and the legacy of the Great Exhibition, one of the defining cultural events of the 19th century.
