This impressive Victorian silver centerpiece (Tafelaufsatz) was crafted by Alexander MacRae in London in 1875–1876, bearing English hallmarks for sterling silver (.925) and the maker’s initials “AM.” The composition features the classical figure of Ganymede, mythological cupbearer to the gods, standing as a sculptural support and accompanied by the eagle of Zeus, rendered with strong neoclassical influence.

The piece is constructed in two parts and raised on a circular, multi-stepped base, richly engraved with floral and foliate motifs that continue up the shaft. The shallow dish is bordered with applied beading and was originally fitted with a removable glass insert, now absent. The overall scale and sculptural quality place the piece firmly in the tradition of grand Victorian table silver intended for ceremonial or display use rather than everyday service.

Ganymede is symbolically presented here as a patron of the culinary arts, and the centerpiece is historically documented as a prize for culinary competitions in Frankfurt am Main. A later engraved dedication on the rim records its award to the British National Team in 1960, adding an important layer of provenance and historical narrative to the object.
