This rare and highly characterful Indian colonial silver novelty salt was produced by the celebrated firm Hamilton & Co of Calcutta around 1910. Cast in solid silver, the piece is modelled as an oval reserve of standing wheat, finely detailed to capture the texture and movement of the crop. At one end stands a detachable figural element depicting a man firing a rifle, lending the object a narrative quality rooted in colonial sporting and rural imagery.

The entire composition rests on a grassy oval base, carefully textured to enhance realism. The interior of the salt is gilt, providing both visual contrast and functional protection from corrosion. The foot rim is engraved with the sentimental inscription: “In memory of the good old times,” suggesting the piece was conceived as a commemorative or presentation object rather than a purely utilitarian table item.

The underside bears the distinctive elephant mark and H&Co stamp associated with Hamilton & Co, confirming its origin and quality. A rare survival of Indian colonial novelty silver, combining technical skill, storytelling, and historical context.
