A German sterling silver figural compote
A German sterling silver figural compote
Late 19th to early 20th century German silver figural compote featuring a shell-form bowl with repoussé sea imagery, supported by a dolphin rider standard on a sculpted base.
This finely crafted German figural silver compote dates to the late 19th or early 20th century and exemplifies high-quality continental silversmithing of the period. The shell-form bowl is richly decorated in repoussé with animated marine scenes depicting putti riding dolphins amid stylized waves. The bowl is supported by an elaborate figural standard in the form of a dolphin with a rider holding a trident and reins, lending the piece strong mythological and maritime symbolism.
The standard rises from a conforming, repoussé-decorated foot with flowing wave motifs, providing both stability and visual continuity. The compote bears German hallmarks for .800 silver, though XRF testing indicates a higher silver content ranging between approximately .915 and .940 purity. Marked for an unidentified maker.
A sculptural and decorative object intended as a centerpiece or display piece, reflecting the historicist and Art Nouveau influences prevalent in German silverwork of the era.
